The Barwon Heads Road Upgrade (BHRU) project involves duplication and upgrades to four kilometres of Barwon Heads Road between Settlement Road and Reserve Road. The project was divided into three work packages, and Tonkin + Taylor has been engaged by Decmil to complete Work Package 1, which includes the northern 1.5km of the BHRU between Settlement Road and Barwarre Road.
The project was delivered on time and within budget. Settlement monitoring data collected has confirmed the performance of ground improvements and has enabled an earlier release of the hold point for pavement construction.

Services

  • Geotechnical investigation and factual reporting
  • Geotechnical interpretation of design parameters
  • Ground improvement design for embankment and bridge approaches
  • Foundation design for a creek crossing integral bridge

Client

  • Decmil

Year

  • 2021 – 2023

Additional services

  • Top-down retaining wall design (soldier-piled wall)
  • Bottom-up retaining wall design (cantilever, L-shape and post and panel wall)
  • Pavement design
  • Ground instrumentation plan, settlement and horizontal movement monitoring
  • Temporary works design (piling and crane pads)
  • Construction Phase Support (CPS), including piling supervision and validation of ground conditions.

Innovative solutions

  • Multiple cost and time-effective ground improvement techniques (i.e. preloading, surcharging, wick drain and controlled modulus columns). These were strategically designated across various zones within the Waurn Ponds Creek bridge approaches to meet the required settlement and stability performance criteria.
  • Tonkin + Taylor had also designed a dual-purpose retaining wall supporting fill adjacent to the Jarringot Wetland, as well as a cantilevered shared-user path structure.
  • Tonkin + Taylor incorporated the construction program, staging, and temporary construction loading (i.e., crane /piling rig) into the design of permanent ground improvement to ensure the potential impact on the new structures is minimised and catered for, and to minimise delay to construction.
We also contributed to positive sustainability outcomes by reducing material and noise impacts through the adoption of preloading/surcharging/wick drain ground improvement techniques to accelerate consolidation settlement during construction (compared to a piled foundation).
