The proposed Transport Sector Project Development Facility (TSPDF) will support the upgrade of priority transport projects in roads, maritime and aviation sectors through the preparation of feasibility studies, detailed designs, and initial procurement and safeguards activities. In particular:

• Upgrading and seismic strengthening of both the Honiara and Noro International Ports

• 7 new wharves at various Outer Island locations

• Upgrading and rehabilitation of 80 km of a mix of rural/urban roading on Guadalcanal

• CCA/DRR and  natural hazard assessments for all projects.

Tonkin + Taylor International were part of the Cardno-led design team which undertook the initial Technical Assistance (TA) scoping study for the project and were subsequently engaged to complete the detailed investigations, design and contract packaging for selected parts of the assignment.

Innovations delivered

Tonkin + Taylor International were responsible for delivering the CCA/DRR assessments, geology/geotechnical engineering issues, materials assessments during the Concept design phase. We also completed the detailed geotechnical engineering investigations (incl. UXO surveys), lab testing, material source studies, factual and Interpretive reporting. Specialist expertise was provided in the design phase to complete probabilistic seismic hazard assessments for the two port facilities at Honiara and Noro. A comprehensive package of soil-structure foundation modelling, including liquefaction analysis was provided to optimise the pile foundation designs for the port works. CCA/DRR and natural hazards assessments for all the projects included detailed reporting for Honiara Port concept options study to meet international standards. Detailed coastal design was also provided for a vulnerable section of the rural road works.
