Project overview
Newcastle City Council required a comprehensive understanding of the wave climate and coastal processes affecting the historic ocean baths to ensure the redevelopment design would perform under both current and future coastal conditions.
The Newcastle Ocean Baths Revitalisation project involved the redevelopment of the historic Newcastle Ocean Baths complex. To support the design process, Tonkin + Taylor delivered specialist coastal engineering advice through detailed wave process investigations and numerical modelling. The work provided a robust technical basis for understanding wave conditions affecting the site, informing engineering design and identifying measures to improve the resilience and performance of the revitalised facility.
A key differentiator was the collection of project-specific data during a significant inundation event, allowing the numerical model to be calibrated against real-world conditions and providing increased confidence in the design recommendations.
The study delivered:
• Reliable design wave loads to inform engineering design.
• Improved understanding of current and future wave conditions.
• Evidence-based assessment of mitigation measures to enhance the resilience of the revitalised ocean baths.
