Stonefields Development – Transforming a Former Quarry into a Thriving Community
For more than two decades, Tonkin + Taylor has played a pivotal role in the creation of Stonefields — one of Auckland’s largest and most successful urban regeneration projects. What began as a disused basalt quarry in Mt Wellington has been transformed into a vibrant, resilient medium‑density neighbourhood, with Tonkin + Taylor providing the geotechnical and environmental expertise needed to unlock the site’s true potential.
A Complex Site Reimagined
The former quarry presented significant challenges, including steep, unstable rock faces and areas of contaminated land. Tonkin + Taylor’s geotechnical and environmental specialists worked closely with a series of developers to safely and sustainably reshape the landscape, enabling the construction of:
- Medium‑density homes
- Multi‑storey apartment buildings
- A bustling town centre
- A central wetland and stormwater pond that now forms a key ecological and community asset
Tonkin + Taylor also supported adjacent development projects along Morrin Road, helping ensure cohesive and resilient outcomes across the wider area.
Innovative Engineering Delivering Long‑Term Value
Our team pioneered several stabilisation and development approaches that have set new standards for quarry‑rehabilitation projects. By designing solutions that enabled buildings to be safely constructed on and around the former quarry faces, Tonkin + Taylor significantly expanded the site’s developable footprint and unlocked opportunities previously considered unfeasible.
In areas affected by historical contamination, Tonkin + Taylor worked proactively with council and disposal facilities to develop pathways that enabled safe, compliant redevelopment. This collaborative, solutions‑focused approach allowed land once deemed undevelopable to contribute valuable new housing and public amenities.
A 20‑Year Partnership
Now nearing completion, Stonefields stands as a testament to long‑term vision, innovation, and technical excellence. We’re proud to have supported this project from its earliest planning phases through to delivery — helping shape a thriving new Auckland community built on resilience, sustainability, and smart engineering.
