The Mt Cass Wind Farm is a 94.6 MW renewable energy project under construction near Waipara in North Canterbury, South Island.

Scheduled for completion in 2028, the 22-turbine site will be the largest in the South Island, producing enough clean electricity to power roughly 40,000 homes.

Engineering Challenges

The Mt Cass Wind Farm development presented significant engineering challenges. Turbine platforms, access roads, and associated infrastructure were located mostly on steep, variable terrain, requiring careful geometric, earthworks, and slope stability design.

Consent conditions were aimed at protecting indigenous vegetation and minimising disturbance to those of higher ecological value.

The client required a design solution that balanced constructability and cost efficiency with ecological constraints.

Innovation

Revizto was used as a visualisation and communication tool to integrate aerial imagery, LiDAR data, and a Leapfrog rock surface model with turbine locations, access roads, platforms, and stormwater infrastructure in a single 3D environment. This improved understanding of subsurface conditions and supported collaboration.

The project also used an innovative gapping foundation design and detailed geotechnical modelling to reduce the construction footprint and optimise designs within the site’s steep and environmentally sensitive terrain.

By combining innovative digital collaboration tools with targeted geotechnical and foundation design optimisation, the project team delivered a constructable and compliant design in a highly constrained environment. The solutions reduced environmental impacts, improved design efficiency, and supported the development of one of New Zealand’s significant renewable energy projects.
